Don't fall for it

Scams to know

Crooked taxi drivers

Drivers may attempt to change the agreed price at the end of a trip. Avoid this by using GG or Yandex apps, or by agreeing on a price beforehand and refusing to pay if the driver attempts to gouge you.

Don't do this

Laws that jail tourists

Bribery prohibition

Do not offer a bribe to anyone. Offering a bribe can result in legal trouble.

Same-sex marriage ban

Same-sex marriages are formally banned in Armenia.

Local know-how

Staying safe

  • Armenia is a very safe country, so you shouldn't worry about walking around late at night. People leave you to your own devices.
  • Overall, Yerevan is also safe, though theft and pickpocketing are not unheard of, particularly targeting foreigners.
  • Female travellers should be aware that unaccompanied women are an unusual sight after dark.
  • The biggest problem you may encounter in Armenia are crooked taxi drivers, especially in Yerevan.
  • Corruption: Since Armenia had a velvet revolution in 2018, corruption of the type that tourists might encounter has largely been eliminated. Do not offer a bribe, as it may actually land you in trouble.
  • Racism: Armenia is, to a significant extent, a highly welcoming country.

Staying healthy

  • If you are dining with Armenians, they will feed you until you cannot eat any more. The food is generally safe, even from the roadside khorovats stands.
  • The tap water is generally safe, as it comes directly from mountains.
  • Smoke: Despite one of the highest rates of smoking in Europe, Armenia has very restrictive non-smoking laws in restaurants and bars.

Real talk

What travelers actually say

Travelers consider Armenia a safe destination for solo travelers and couples alike. Violent crime is not a noted concern in the provided discussions, and the country is generally viewed as safe for visitors. While travelers seek advice on logistics, itineraries, and local recommendations for skiing in Tsaghkadzor or visiting South Armenia, there are no specific warnings regarding scams, dangerous neighborhoods, or transport hazards mentioned in these accounts. The primary focus for those visiting Yerevan and beyond remains on planning activities and respecting local customs rather than navigating high-risk security threats or criminal activity.

I know the countries are reasonably safe, do you still have any suggestions?

Also any places to avoid or things not to do (so we are respecting all rules) too would be insightful from a safety aspect.

I’m traveling to Armenia with my wife in a few days and would love a few recommendations of places to see, eat, drink, visit, and party potentially?
