Laws that jail tourists
Photography restrictions
Photography is prohibited near military installations and high-level government buildings like the President's office. Look for posted signs indicating where these restrictions apply.
Passport requirement
While police checkpoints in the countryside focus on vehicle registration and insurance rather than passenger IDs, it is wise to carry your passport or a copy at all times.

Local know-how
Staying safe
- •Rwanda is generally a safe country for visitors.
- •The possible exceptions are certain places along the Congolese and Burundian borders, where the security situation can change.
- •Visitors should follow typical precautions: avoid flaunting expensive jewellery, keep a close eye on wallets and bags in crowded markets and bus stations.
- •Begging and aggressive panhandling is fairly rare.
- •When travelling by bus or car in the countryside, expect to pass through several police checkpoints.
- •Photography near certain high-level government buildings such as the President's office and military installations is not permitted. Signs are posted where restrictions apply.
Staying healthy
- •Despite being close to the equator, Rwanda's high altitude (Kigali sits at around 1,500 m) keeps the climate temperate rather than tropical hot.
- •Tap water is not drinkable.
- •Pharmacies stocked with over-the-counter medications, Band-Aids, etc.
- •If you do need medical attention, Kigali has decent facilities.
- •Malaria risk in Kigali is low thanks to the altitude, but increases in lower lying areas like Akagera National Park and the Lake Kivu shoreline.
- •HIV/AIDS prevalence among adults is approximately 3%. Practice safe sex. Avoid intravenous drug use.

Real talk
What travelers actually say
Travelers report no significant safety issues while visiting Rwanda. The primary experience in Kigali involves being hassled by vendors at local markets, though this is characterized as persistent rather than dangerous. Visitors should be prepared for the physical demands of activities like gorilla trekking, as underestimating fitness levels can cause delays and distress for the group. There is no mention of violent crime or specific "no-go" areas in the provided accounts. Travelers generally find the country navigable and safe for tourists.
“Went to the genocide museum (horrifying but super interesting) and some markets - wouldn't really recommend, hassled (not in a bad way) quite a lot.

“So good. But please have a realistic gauge of your fitness levels, few issues with USA girls in our group over-estimating their fitness levels and really stalling everyone with unnecessary panic attacks on the mountain.
— r/travel
“And please make sure to bring enough cash to tip porters, ranges, guides and drivers (some people didn't...).
