Local know-how

Staying safe

  • Crime: Taiwan is very safe for tourists, even for women walking down the street alone at night.
  • Like anywhere else in the world, women should be cautious when taking taxis alone late at night.
  • Police departments in most jurisdictions have a Foreign Affairs Police unit staffed by English-speaking officers.
  • Foreign victims of a major crime in Taiwan are also advised to report the matter to their government's representative office in Taipei.
  • Also, remember that you call 110 for police in Taiwan, and 119 for fire department or medical help.
  • Taiwan is home to many triads (Chinese organized crime syndicates), although they almost never target the average person in the street, and most tourists will not encounter them.

Staying healthy

  • Pollution: Air pollution can be significant with the highest ratio of scooters per person in the world and a high west coast urban density.
  • Water: Water quality in Taiwan varies depending on location and time.
  • Taiwan is prone to typhoons and earthquakes, which adversely affects water quality.
  • Water quality in Kaohsiung used to be very poor.
  • Healthcare: Medicines are available for minor ailments at drug stores.
  • Taiwan has both Chinese physicians and Western doctors, both of which are taken equally seriously.
