Where to actually avoid

Avoid: Deep South (Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, parts of Songkhla)

Decades-long separatist insurgency; frequent bombings and shootings targeting security forces, occasionally civilians.

Don't fall for it

Scams to know

"The Grand Palace is closed today" tuk-tuk scam

A friendly local tells you a major sight is closed for a holiday/prayer/cleaning, then offers a tuk-tuk to a "better" alternative — usually a commission-paying gem or tailor shop. The palace is not closed. Counter-move: walk to the gate yourself and check opening hours online before you leave your hotel.

Jet ski / rental damage scam

Return a rented jet ski or scooter and be told you damaged it, with a large cash payment demanded on the spot, sometimes with intimidation. Counter-move: photograph/video every rental in detail before you take it, and use a card, not a passport, as the deposit.

Gem and tailor "good deal today only" scam

Gems or custom suits sold at a steep 'wholesale' price that turn out to be worthless or never delivered as promised. Counter-move: never buy jewelry or clothing on a same-day pressure pitch, especially one a tuk-tuk driver steered you toward.

Don't do this

Laws that jail tourists

Lèse-majesté

Criticizing, insulting, or defaming the monarchy is a criminal offense carrying up to 15 years per count — this includes social media posts and shares, even from abroad in some prosecutions. Avoid the topic entirely in public and online.

Cannabis is restricted again

After a period of decriminalization, recreational cannabis use and sale is restricted; possession without a valid medical justification/prescription can result in fines or prosecution. Do not assume the earlier decriminalized status still applies.

E-cigarettes and vapes are banned

Importing, possessing, or using e-cigarettes/vapes is illegal, with fines and confiscation reported at airports.

Staying healthy

What to watch out for, health-wise

Active notices

  • • Dengue fever — year-round risk, higher in rainy season (Jun–Oct)
  • • Japanese encephalitis — risk in rural/agricultural areas for longer stays

Tap water safe to drink: No — bottled/filtered only

Vaccines

Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis (long stays)

Getting in

What you'll need at the border

Visa exemption on arrival for most nationalities for stays up to 30-60 days depending on nationality and entry mode; longer stays require a visa in advance.

Passport validity required: 6 months beyond entry.

Real talk

What travelers actually say

Most r/solotravel and r/Thailand threads agree Bangkok and the main tourist islands feel safe walking around even at night, with the real risks being scooter accidents (helmet laws barely enforced, insurance often invalid for foreigners without a Thai license), and the classic tuk-tuk/gem-shop hustles rather than violent crime.

Nobody mugged me in three weeks but I watched two separate tourists get talked into the 'palace is closed' routine on the same day.

— r/solotravel

The scooter is the actual danger, not people. Wear the helmet, get the license, or just take Grab everywhere.

Tipping

Not obligatory but appreciated; round up or leave 20-50 THB for good service.

SIM / Data

Prepaid tourist SIMs (AIS, dtac, True) are available at the airport and 7-Elevens; eSIM options exist for most major carriers.

Cash vs. Card

Cash still rules for street food, markets, and tuk-tuks; cards fine in malls and hotels. Carry small bills.
