Staying safe

  • Violence: Demonstrations occur from time to time, and are sometimes violent or broken up brutally.
  • In 2015, Islamist terrorists targeted tourists in Tunisia.
  • Female travellers: It is apparently not considered rude for a man to stare at a woman's body which indicates that modesty will attract less attention.
  • Tunisian women often wear outfits that would normally be seen on the streets of any major world city (tight jeans, slinky top), but they do so while showing traditional modesty by exposing virtually no skin.
  • In most towns, there are outdoor cafes around squares and on the streets, but they are only for men; even when accompanied by men, women are not welcome.
  • Money and scams: Travellers report problems being pestered either to buy something or for other purposes. Persistence is a major complaint.…

Staying healthy

  • Health care: Tunisia, especially in tourist destinations and major cities, has hospitals of international standard.
  • There are several private clinics of international standard in the Tunisian capital and tourist centres.
  • A few clinics in the capital Tunis include Clinique Internationale Hannibal, Les Cliniques El Manar, Clinique Saint Augustin and Polyclinique Les Berges du Lac.
  • Dental care in Tunis is provided by DENTYSS (Montplaisir).
  • In Soussé, some hotels have their own doctors who will make medical visits if necessary.
  • For more information on public health care prices, visit the Tunisian Ministry of Health website in French. Prices should be verified separately on the spot.

Real talk

What travelers actually say

Travelers report that Tunisia is generally laidback and safe, with no significant concerns regarding violent crime. The primary safety issues involve opportunistic attempts by locals to extract money, such as pushy bar staff or tour guides demanding extra tips. Women should be aware of frequent catcalling and inappropriate comments. Police checkpoints are ubiquitous, particularly in Tunis, and while some view them as security measures, others perceive them as tools for intimidation or corruption. Travelers should exercise caution with taxi meters and bar tabs to avoid overcharging. While some anecdotal reports mention protection money scams, others find the country more relaxed than neighboring regions.

My friend and I never felt unsafe. There were multiple uncomfortable moments, but we typically got the impression people were just opportunistically trying to get money out of us rather than putting us in any danger.

A good friend of mine travelled to Tunisia with his wife recently. They told me that they were stopped by thugs on two separate occasions while in Hammamet and had to pay protection money.

There are police checkpoints literally everywhere, especially in Tunis. They're typically in busy areas or at major intersections. While going around Tunis in taxis we got stopped multiple times a day.
